From GOTRVT to the NYC Marathon: Annika’s Journey 👟💫

Tomorrow, Annika Heintz, a senior at the University of Vermont double majoring in Political Science and Environmental Studies with a minor in Geospatial Technologies, will take on one of the world’s major marathons, the New York City Marathon. As a two-time Vermont City Marathon finisher, she is now setting her sights on a third, marking another milestone in her running accomplishments.

Annika’s running journey began in 3rd grade at Wallingford Elementary School as a participant in Girls on the Run Vermont. Our program, and her family’s love of running and cycling, helped her discover a passion for healthy movement. From an after-school program to a lifelong love for running, Annika carries forward the confidence and life skills she gained along the way. Her story is a powerful example of how GOTRVT, along with her family’s support, cultivates not just physical strength but also courage, perseverance, and a lasting sense of purpose.

As she awaits the start of the NYC marathon, Annika is dreaming even bigger, with the goal of one day completing all of the World Marathon Majors. Every mile she runs reminds her of the lessons she first learned in Girls on the Run. Annika says,

“I hope girls today take away an understanding that running can be a fun, meaningful way to build community, discover inner strength, and navigate difficult emotions.”

Her journey shows how the confidence and resilience she developed in Girls on the Run continue to guide her in every step, on the course and beyond.
